General Robert E. Lee was born on January 19, 1807 in Stratford Hall, Virginia. He was an American soldier best known for commanding the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia in the Civil War. At the age of 18, he enrolled into West Point Military Academy. After great success at the academy, he graduated and married Mary Custis. After having seven children, Lee wanted to stay committed to his military career. He was often moved from many places such as Baltimore to New York. He later went to war in Mexico, an opportunity he had been waiting for most of his life.
He was brave in battle and served under General Winfield Scott. After the war, he returned home to help his family who was struggling to keep their property. After two years spent with his beloved family, he returned to war. He put a stop to the insurrection at Harper's Ferry led by John Brown. Later on, he agreed to help lead the Confederate forces. He fought in many battles including the battle of Gettysburg.
General Lee later passed away in October of 1870 due to a stroke. He will forever be remembered in our hearts for the courageous work he did to help our country.
