The battle of Gettysburg was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. On July 1st, 1863, the Union had an early setback when the Confederacy had pushed back against the Iron Brigade and utilized a weak Federal line. Following the first of the three challenging days came a heavy battle around Devil's Den, the Wheatfield, Culp's Hill, Peach Orchard, and East Cemetery Hill. The second day was the bloodiest day of them all. On the last day of battle (July 3, 1863), fighting at Culp's Hill had brought the Union back on it's feet. Later in the day, Lee attacked the Union on Cemetery Ridge and miserably failed, leaving roughly 51,000 wounded, missing, or dead. The battle was also home to about 1/3 of the pictures of dead soldiers laying in fields from the Civil War.
